Over five years ago, the Pan-African Parliament — an offshoot of the African Union — was created in Ethiopia. Since then, the parliament has been moved to Midrand, South Africa, a town about halfway between Johannesburg, and that country’s capital, Pretoria. The body’s 265 parliamentary representatives are elected by the legislatures and parliaments of the AU’s 53 respective member states.

The building, which just began in May 2009 and was due to open next year, has just been delayed due to the discovery of a swamp and wetland area on the building site. The area is presumed to be part of the Hennops River, which runs through both Pretoria and Johannesburg.

Engineers, architects and local policymakers are now trying to work out how to incorporate the wetland into the design of the structure.

“We are pleased that the wetland was discovered before more damage was done to the area,” said Makude Kekana, who is overseeing the project for South Africa’s Department of Public Works, in an interview with the BBC.

Apparently due to an interruption in rail service from South Africa’s coast, Johannesburg’s Tambo airport has recently been running short on jet fuel, reports the Agence France Presse.

As Africa’s busiest airport, and a key hub for next year’s World Cup Final, this situation is quite worrying to many at the southern tip of the continent.

A government probe is underway to investigate the exact cause of the shortage, and hopefully to prevent it from happening again.

The AFP quoted government spokesman Bheki Khumalo as saying:”The minister wants to ensure that we are ready for 2010. She has asked all of them to work together and ensure that there is sufficient supply of jet fuel at the airport.”

Since late 2006, Johannesburg-based mobile provider, MTN, has owned and operated 49 percent of MTN Irancell, one of the major mobile operators in Iran.

However, with recent turmoil in Iran, including limits and blockage of mobile service by the Iranian government in the wake of the recent elections, the South African newspaper The Times reported that the operator stood to lose one month’s worth of revenue given the recent outages.

According to the paper, that would be roughly €9 million.

MTN Irancell has over 16 million Iranian customers and covers 62 percent of the territory.

But today, a company spokesperson denied that MTN has been blocking service.

“MTN network is running in Iran and there is nothing wrong with it,” MTN Group spokeswoman Nozipho Januray-Bardill told Reuters.

No word yet on how MTN’s performance and stance with respect to Iran will affect its pending merger with Indian mobile giant Bharti.

Johannesburg is one of the most vibrant cities in southern Africa. The city is one of the most historically rich in the region — the discovery site of the world’s richest hominid site sits about 25 kilometers outside the city limits. In the late 19th century, gold was discovered in the area, and a mass influx of people came to the city. More recently, the city has a greater metropolitan population of over 10 million people. Later, during the apartheid area, it was home to the famous segregated ghetto, Soweto. Today, however, Joburg contains some of the highest buildings on the entire African continent, including the Sentech Tower.
