On the 8th of August 80+1 was connected to Mintama Gallery in Okinawa. Visitors of the 80+1 Basecamp were invited to meet members from the gallery in Nago/Okinawa and ask them questions on the Global Window. One of the interesting feature of this gallery is, that all generations run the gallery together. In the morning the topic of exchange was longevity, since Okinawa is the place in the world with the highest number of cenetarians. After lunch people in Linz had the rare occasion to talk to an expert of Awamori, the local drink, how it is refined to become a delicatesse served for special occasions, the long history behind it and the influence of the Battle of Okinawa on Awamori. The event in Nago was organized by Yuken Maeda, a graphic designer from Okinawa and a member of Minatama Gallery. Both sides have been surprised that being connected with the Global Window and outside the Basecamp in the tent, where the Kajimaya Party took place, was a very warm one.

On Saturday, the 8th of August, the first Kajimaya Party took place in Linz. The weather was great and all guests have been in real good mood. Martin Honzik was the charming moderator and the 97 years old ladies and the one gentleman gave hints on how to live a long life: Love is very important. Spending many years on earth, one can tell sad stories too though. This part of life was as well on the table. Isabelle Prochaska told the guests how Kajimaya is celebrated in Okinawa. Sabine and Mario Shirakura from the restaurant Izakaya served delicious Japanese food and the Kajimaya Band (Isabelle Prochaska, Stan Meyer und Sigrid Hofmeister-Watanabe) connected the sounds from Okinawa with local ones. For the first Kajimaya Party in Linz people also gathered in Gallery Mintama in Nago/Okinawa. Everybody in Linz and Okinawa connected their spirits with liquid spirits from both places and the theatergroup Herbstwind (again: one gentleman among many ladies) from Linz brought the party with a local dance from Okinawa by inviting everybody to join the dance to a jolly finish.

Okinawa is Japan`s southermost island blessed with white sand beaches and blue oceans that hosts the world`s highest ratio of cenetarians. As of 2008, according to the Japanese Ministry of Health, there are approxoantely 61 such persons out of 100 000. By comparison, the United States only has a ration of 10-20 per 100 000. This project focuses why older Okinawans are so remarkably healthy so far into their senior years and captures moments of their lifestyle. Local community and family embracing, human and nature embracing, embracing Okinawan people, culture, nature, history and aging - for the Okinawans, and the rest of us.

It is a unique collaboration between Yutaka Kobayashi and his students from the University of the Ryukyus to develop the video projection as part of 80+1, A journey around the World, the project of Ars Electronica for Linz09.

Kajimaya means wind wheel. Children play with wind wheels. In the year of their 97th birthday, people in Okinawa are returning to be a child and this is celebrated intensively in their communities. The costum goes back to a folktale: A long time ago the Sky God molded figures out of clay. But coming back to where he left them the day before, he found them to be destroyed every morning. It was the Earth God, who was not pleased of the idea of somebody else using his element who destroyed them each time he found them. The two Gods finally agreed that the figures which where ment to become Humans were allowed to live 100 years. After 97 years the Earth God wanted to have his clay back. The Sky God disagreed, because 100 years have not been over yet. But the Earth God argumented that is was because of the leap years that he claimed his clay back already. The two Gods again found a solution: All Humans who have lived 97 years should return into their childhood, so everything could start from the beginning. That was the beginning of Kajimaya and for the people in Okinawa it is one of the most important celebrations. Since Okinawa is the place in the world with the highest number of cenetarians, many of them were able to celebrate their Kajimaya already. On the 8th of August 12 people in Linz, who are 97 years old, will celebrate with their friends, families and Japanese people living in Linz. Not as long ago as the begin of Kajimaya and long after the 12 people celebrating their Kajimaya in Linz have been born a woman from the part in Upper Austria called the Mühlviertel and a man from Japan got married. Their son is now running the Japanese Restaurant Izakaya in Urfahr. Mother and Son have chosen three Japanese dishes which the honorees would find tasty. There will be music from Okinawa performed by the members of the band Kajimaya and the theater group Herbstwind will present their interpretation of a very popular Okinawan dance. A video of a Kajimaya in Okinawa will be screened and people in Linz can contact people in Okinawa via Skype. The wind will play with the wind wheels during the first Kajimaya in Linz to honor the 97-year old people in Linz, the true experts og longevity.
