This tunnel is actually three tunnels in a single location, all of which serve to connect the Swiss cantons of Uri and Ticino by passing under and through the daunting Swiss Alps. The rail tunnel, completed in 1882, is a 15-kilometer long strip of railway linking the towns of Göschenen and Aiolo. In 1980, the St. Gotthard Road Tunnel served as a road link between those same locales, and at 24.51 kilometers, it is the third-longest such tunnel in the world. Currently, a third rail tunnel is under construction — once complete in 2012, the Gotthard Base Tunnel will be the longest rail or road tunnel in the world.
