Okinawa is an island between Taiwan and southern Kyushu that hosts the world’s highest ratio of centenarians, or people who are over 100 years old. As of 2006, according to the Japanese Ministry of Health, there are approximately 50 such persons out of 100,000 – which translates to 740 on the entire island. By comparison, the United States only has a ratio of 10-20 per 100,000. For three decades there has been an international study of the island’s centenarian population, known as the Okinawa Centenarian Study.
