Founded in 1991, the Austrian non-profit organization, “Rainforest of the Austrians” purchased over 3200 hectares of rainforest to give to the Costa Rican government. In 1993, the Republic of Austria helped to purchase an old farmhouse in La Gamba that was then donated to Rainforest of the Austrians to use as a base station, research facility and lodging house for scientists. Since 2002, a new non-profit organization, the “Sponsoring Association of Field Station La Gamba” was established, and is funded by the Republic of Austria, the University of Vienna, Rainforest of the Austrians and various private donors.
