Leave it to the (presumably male) Dhaka police force to come up with a novel way to counter the rise of theft in their city: cross-dress.
According to a report from the Agence France Presse, Dhaka police officers have recently been wearing wigs and women’s clothes, including burkas, designed to be a sort of “honeypot” trap for would-be theives.
The new patrols, which have been nicknamed “burka squards,” are a rather novel way to combat muggers, bag snatchers and pickpockets.
In an interview with the AFP, Deputy Police Commissioner Imtiaz Hossain said: “We took this unusual move because of rising crime in the city and it is working.”
He added: “In the past four days we have arrested some 60 wanted muggers who have been targeting our officers thinking they are women civilians.”
Man, wouldn’t this make a great TV show? CSI: Burka Squad!
